pilot applications for the EUChinaGRID initiative
The following are the pilot applications proposed for the EUChinaGRID initiative:
Astrophysics: the Cosmic Ray Experiment ARGO in Yangbajing (Tibet) - Nowadays, several hundreds of Gigabytes of data from the Yangbajing lab are exchanged via magnetic tape. Grid technology, combined with a gigabit link, will greatly improve the efficiency of the data transfer and coordinated analysis between Europe and China. ARGO is already an INFN-Grid supported application.
High energy Phisics: ATLAS and CMS experiments at LHC (Large Handron Collider)- Currently under construction at CERN, LHC will start taking data in 2007 and a strong group of Chinese scientists is actively participating to the experiment. The data collected by each experiment will be of the order of 100 Mbytes per second and will be widely available to all the collaborators in Europe and worldwide, provided that a good connectivity and a compatible grid infrastructure is available. ATLAS and CMS are already EGEE supported application.
Biology: New kinds of Proteins - The number of natural proteins on Earth, although apparently large, is only a tiny fraction of the possible ones: there is an astronomically large number of proteins that have never been realized on Earth (the so-called “never born proteins", NBP).The present research plan is based on a computational approach to study a large library of NBP (10**9 protein sequences), to the aim of clarifying the structural principles that characterize them and of selecting a reasonable number of sequences which can potentially give rise to stably folded proteins. With the help of a Grid infrastructure, will be possible to enlarge by orders of magnitude the libraries, distribute them among different laboratories interested and implement new and more powerful selection algorithms.
HIGHLIGHTS
The EUChinaGRID project officially ended on 31 March 2008, after 27 months of activity and a number of goals achieved.
However, the project consortium is planning further collaboration activities for the next few months.
